RIGGS STEPHENSON AUTOGRAPHED CLEVELAND INDIANS 8X10 PHOTO

Stephenson batted .319 or better in 12 of his 14 major league seasons, but was poor defensively. Signed as a second baseman, he had a weak arm that kept him from playing regularly in his five years with Cleveland (1921-25). Converted to the outfield during a stint in the minors, he still had to depend on his potent bat to keep him in the Cubs' lineup. His throwing difficulties were the result of a shoulder injury sustained while playing football at the University of Alabama. It hindered him on pivot throws at second base, and, during one season in the Cubs outfield, he had only one assist. In 1927, his first full season with Chicago, he led the NL with 46 doubles. In the Cubs' 1929 pennant-winning year, he combined with Hall of Famers Hack Wilson and Kiki Cuyler in the only outfield in NL history in which each member had more than 100 RBI. (Stephenson 110, Wilson 159, Cuyler 102). Arm and leg injuries forced him to leave the Cubs in 1934, but he played and managed in the minors through 1939. (BIO FROM BASEBALL LIBRARY) 74.99

JOHNNY VANDER MEER AUTOGRAPHED CINCINNATI REDS 8X10 PHOTO

Vander Meer is the only pitcher in major league history to have thrown back-to-back no-hitters. The Cincinnati hurler no-hit the Boston Bees 3-0 on June 11, 1938 and followed by no-hitting the Dodgers 6-0 on June 15. The latter contest was the first night game ever played at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. In his next start, Vander Meer did not allow a hit until Boston's Deb Garms singled in the fourth inning, ending Vander Meer's string of hitless innings at a National League record 21. HOYT WILHELM AUTOGRAPHED N.Y. GIANTS 8X10 PHOTO

At the time of his retirement in 1972, knuckleballing master reliever Hoyt Wilhelm had appeared in more games (1,070) than any pitcher in major league history, with a late-starting ML career that still spanned 21 years. He established records for relief wins (123), games pitched in relief (1,018), games finished by a pitcher (651), and innings pitched in relief (1,870). His 227 saves place him among the all-time leaders. Fittingly, he was the first relief pitcher elected to the Hall of Fame, and the first pitcher inducted with fewer than 150 career wins.

DON LARSEN AUTOGRAPHED N.Y. YANKEES PERFECT GAME 8X10 PHOTO

Though he had a mediocre career record, Larsen was immortalized by his World Series perfect game of October 8, 1956. He had gone 11-5 for the Yankees that year and, after being knocked out in the second inning of Game Two, started Game Five. He set down 27 Dodgers in a row, outdueling Sal Maglie and winning 2-0 for the first no-hitter in Series history. The last batter Larsen faced was Dale Mitchell, who was declared out by umpire Babe Pinelli on a called third strike. Mitchell and others, including Mickey Mantle in centerfield, thought the ball a bit outside, but mayhem had erupted and catcher Yogi Berra had jumped into Larsen's arms before Mitchell could argue. PETE GRAY AUTOGRAPHED ST. LOUIS BROWNS 8X10 PHOTO

Despite losing his right arm in a childhood truck accident, Gray became a major league ballplayer. The naturally righthanded youngster learned to throw and bat from the opposite side. Batting with one arm, Gray sprayed line drives around the field. On the basepaths, he displayed speed and daring, and fielding was a study in agility and dexterity. After catching a fly ball, Gray would tuck his thinly padded glove under his stump, roll the ball across his chest, and throw, all in one fluid motion.

Gray was a semi-pro star in the coal towns of his native Pennsylvania and with the famed Brooklyn Bushwicks. He entered pro ball in 1942 with Three Rivers (Canadian-American League) and hit .381 in 42 games. In the Southern Association in 1943, Gray hit .289 in a full season with Memphis. He won national attention in 1944 when he batted .333 for Memphis, hit five HR, tied a league record by stealing 68 bases, and was named the Southern Association's MVP. This outstanding showing earned Gray a spot with the 1945 St. Louis Browns.

Even with the quality of major league play at an all-time low due to the WWII player shortage, Gray was overmatched. But he was capable of remarkable performances. In a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium in May, Gray had four hits, scored twice, drove in two, and handled nine chances in the outfield. When baseball returned to full strength in 1946, the Browns sent Gray down. He continued to play in the minors and barnstorm with exhibition teams until the early 1950s. Gray retired to his hometown of Nanticoke, PA, and became a recluse. (BIO FROM BASEBALL LIBRARY) 124.99
